What was the original roller coaster at Kings Dominion?

On its opening day in May 1975, Kings Dominion's largest attraction included its roller coaster named the Rebel Yell. The coaster was later renamed to Racer 75. In its inaugural year, Kings Dominion featured several Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters. Among the most popular was Scooby Doo.

When Kings Dominion in Virginia officially opened its gates in 1975, its star attraction and only true roller coaster at the time was The Rebel Yell (now known as Racer 75). This classic wooden racing coaster was designed by the legendary John C. Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and was a centerpiece of the park's "Candy Apple Grove" section. The ride features two parallel tracks where twin trains "race" each other over a series of airtime-filled hills, a design that became iconic in the 1970s theme park boom. Interestingly, for a significant portion of its history, the park ran one of the trains backward to provide a unique thrill, though this was discontinued in 2008 for safety and standardized maintenance reasons. In 2018, as part of the park's rebranding efforts, the ride was renamed Racer 75 to honor its opening year and the heritage of the coaster. While the park now boasts massive steel monsters like Intimidator 305 and the new Rapterra, Racer 75 remains a beloved historical landmark that continues to provide the quintessential "clack-clack-clack" wooden coaster experience for families in 2026.
