The stand-up roller coaster at Kings Dominion was named Shockwave. Manufactured by the Japanese company TOGO, it opened in 1986 and was a landmark attraction for nearly three decades. Shockwave was unique for its "bicycle-style" seats that required riders to stand while navigating a 95-foot lift hill, a vertical loop, and several sharp turns. At the time of its debut, it was a high-thrill novelty, but over the years, many riders found the "stand-up" experience to be rough and uncomfortable. Consequently, the ride was permanently closed on August 9, 2015, and was subsequently dismantled to make room for newer attractions. Today, the space where Shockwave once stood is part of the "Candy Apple Grove" area, and while stand-up coasters have largely fallen out of fashion in major theme parks, Shockwave remains a nostalgic memory for many enthusiasts of the 1980s and 90s coaster era.
