The Disneyland Monorail was built and officially opened on June 14, 1959. It was a historic achievement in transportation, as it was the first daily operating monorail system in the Western Hemisphere. It was originally known as the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System, named after the German company Alweg that collaborated with Disney engineers to design the straddle-beam technology. The monorail was part of a massive 1959 expansion of Tomorrowland, which also saw the debut of the Matterhorn Bobsleds and the Submarine Voyage. Initially, the monorail was just an "attraction" that did a loop around Tomorrowland, but in 1961, the track was extended to connect the park to the Disneyland Hotel, transforming it into a functional transportation system. Over the decades, the fleet has been upgraded several times—moving from the original Mark I trains to the sleek, futuristic Mark VII models that guests ride today in 2026—but the iconic pylons and track remain a symbol of Walt Disney’s vision for the "city of tomorrow."
