Where is the best place to enter Sequoia National Park?

Ash Mountain Entrance to Sequoia National Park Highway 198 enters Sequoia National Park at the town of Three Rivers. Beyond the entrance station, the road is narrow and winding. Vehicles longer than 24 feet (7.3 m) are not advised between the Foothills Visitor Center and Potwisha Campground.

Generals Highway connects the two parks, and their two celebrated stands of giant sequoia groves. A number of popular hiking trailheads are located at selected turnouts along the way, as are overlooks to rocky ridges and sequoia groves.

The main road through Sequoia National Park is the Generals Highway, which runs from one entrance all the way to the other. It takes about an hour and a half to drive all the way through the park on the 47-mile highway, although we'd recommend making plenty of stops along the way.

How long does it take to drive through the park? Give yourself plenty of time. To drive only the Generals Highway from the southern entrance to the northern entrance, allow at least two hours plus whatever time you plan to spend outside of the car.

The best time to visit Sequoia National Park is June through August, when the weather is the most stable. The park is open 24/7, year-round, but there are certain challenges during select seasons. For example, snow chains or tires are required to safely navigate park roads during the winter months.

Sequoia is far less crowded. The redwood groves are unparalleled in all of nature, and while Yosemite has the amazing rock domes and waterfalls, Sequoia has the best forest in all the world.

Redwood boasts about 200 miles of trails, but once again, Sequoia proves to be the more extensive park with 800 miles of trails, including much more varied and challenging routes, like the High Sierra Trail. Still, there are some truly inspiring hikes through Redwood, like the Miner's Ridge Trail.
