Why did Disney do away with meal plans?

While we don't know why Disney hasn't reintroduced its popular dining plan, but we imagine it involves the financial impact of COVID-19. Though Walt Disney World Resort is open once again, the effects of the closure are still felt throughout The Walt Disney Company.

Actually, it is a bit of a misconception that Disney "did away" with them permanently; rather, they were suspended for several years following the 2020 park closures due to capacity constraints and staffing shortages. However, in a major move for 2024 and 2026, Disney officially brought back the Disney Dining Plan. The reason they were missing for so long was that Disney's "all-in-one" pre-paid model requires a high level of predictability in restaurant capacity and food supply chains, both of which were disrupted. During the hiatus, Disney focused on Mobile Ordering through the My Disney Experience app to manage crowds. The return of the Dining Plan in 2026 is a response to guest demand for a more "inclusive" feel to their vacation where they don't have to worry about individual meal prices. Disney realized that the meal plan is a powerful "spending tool" that keeps guests eating on-property rather than seeking cheaper options in Kissimmee or Orlando, making it a win-win for both the company's revenue and guest convenience.
