A red screen that reads Payment Not Accepted means you may have tapped a cancelled card or your payment method may be blocked by the OMNY system.

There could be several reasons why your card isn’t working with OMNY. Here are the most common issues and solutions:

  • International Cards: OMNY primarily accepts domestic credit, debit, and reloadable prepaid cards from major networks (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover). Some international-issued cards (even with these logos) might not work due to issuer restrictions.
  • Prepaid/Gift Cards: Non-reloadable gift cards or certain prepaid cards may not be accepted.
  • Business or Corporate Cards: Some corporate cards may have transit spending disabled.

Solution: Try a different personal debit/credit card. If you’re visiting from abroad, consider using a contactless bank card from your home country (if it supports contactless), a OMNY card, a MetroCard, or a mobile wallet (like Apple Pay, Google Pay).

2. Contactless Functionality

  • Your card might not have contactless technology (look for the wave symbol ⎘ on it).
  • The contactless chip could be damaged or demagnetized.

Solution: Ensure your card is contactless. If not, you can order a replacement from your bank, or add the card to a mobile wallet and tap your phone/watch instead.

3. Payment Method Limits or Holds

  • Daily/Monthly Cap: OMNY has fare caps (after 12 rides in 7 days, additional rides are free). However, your bank might see multiple small charges and place a temporary hold or block.
  • Insufficient Funds: For debit cards, ensure you
