Disney Dollars were officially discontinued in May 2016, primarily because the rise of digital payment technology rendered physical "scrip" obsolete. Introduced in 1987, Disney Dollars were a 1:1 currency that guests could use at Disney Parks and Stores. However, with the introduction of MagicBands, Disney Gift Cards, and mobile payment apps like Apple Pay, the logistical cost of printing, distributing, and anti-counterfeiting physical paper money became unjustifiable. Furthermore, the 2026 perspective on guest behavior shows that travelers prefer the convenience of "tap-to-pay" over carrying delicate paper bills that could be lost or damaged. While they are no longer printed, Disney still honors any existing Disney Dollars at their parks today, as they have no expiration date. They have now transitioned from a functional currency into a high-value collector's item, with rare uncirculated bills from the 1990s often selling for hundreds of dollars on auction sites to Disney enthusiasts.
