As of early 2026, Disney has not fully abolished its theme park reservation system, but it has significantly "streamlined" it to reduce guest friction. Following major updates in 2024 and 2025, most date-based tickets (the standard tickets purchased by most tourists) no longer require a separate park reservation. However, reservations are still required for certain "non-dated" ticket types, such as Annual Passes (Magic Keys), student group tickets, and military promotional tickets. Disney uses this system as a "capacity management tool" to ensure that the parks do not become dangerously overcrowded and to predict staffing needs. While many guests hoped the system would disappear entirely after the pandemic era, Disney leadership has indicated that the data provided by the reservation system is too valuable for operational efficiency. Instead of "doing away" with it, they have moved toward a "hybrid" model where the average vacationer rarely has to deal with it, but "frequent flyers" and passholders must still book their days in advance to maintain balance in the parks.
