Your Key to the World card will be used in many ways throughout your voyage. You will use it to open your stateroom door, charge purchases to your onboard account, check young children out of Disney's Oceaneer Club or Lab, and to debark and embark at ports of call.
If you lose you cabin key (card— no one uses actual keys anymore); on a Disney cruise; or any other cruise line; you simply go to the customer service desk and present a corresponding ID to match their records, they will deactivate the lost card and present you a new card.
DCL cast members will issue every member of your party a KTTWC as you check in at the port. You will need it many times throughout your trip.
