Building large concrete pylons and stations above cities is more expensive than the building of light rails, which require only stations and tracks at ground level.

May 27, 2023 Update: Walt Disney World has reopened the walking path between Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Magic Kingdom. This walkway closed beginning in mid-February and was originally expected to reopen in late Spring 2023.

The monorail however does NOT shut during lightning so the closure would have been unrelated and coincidental. The monorail does stop running during lightning storms.

You can ride the monorail any time. No Disney tickets even needed. If you took a bus from Disney Springs to Epcot or Magic Kingdom, you could ride from there. If you are driving to the Ticket and Transportation center to go to the magic kingdom and park, then the monorail is one of your options to get to the park.

Complimentary Resort transportation begins 45 minutes prior to Disney theme park opening time and up to 1 hour after Disney theme park closing time. Additionally, buses operate until 11:00 PM from the Disney Springs area.

Do you need a park pass reservation to park hop? You will need a park pass reservation for the FIRST park you plan on visiting the day you intend to park hop. However, you do NOT need a park pass reservation for the park you plan on park hopping to.

The Epcot Monorail runs from 8am until 2 hours after regular hours park closing. The Express Monorail schedule begins 30 minutes prior to Magic Kingdom opening until 1 hour after regular hours park closing. So if you have a standard theme park ticket without the Park Hopper Option, you are still free to ride the Epcot Monorail from the Transportation and Ticket Center to Epcot to enjoy the view! The monorail station is located outside of the theme park entrance, so you don't need to worry about theme park tickets.
