Do you need walking shoes for Cinque Terre?

Essential items to hike the Cinque Terre include good, sturdy hiking shoes (I'm very happy with my La Sportiva), sunscreen, bug repellent, and Compeed cushions, in case you get blisters. You won't want to spoil your hike because your feet are hurting!

In 2026, having sturdy walking shoes is not just a suggestion for visiting the Cinque Terre—it is essentially a requirement if you plan to explore the famous coastal trails. The terrain consists of steep, uneven stone steps, narrow dirt paths, and slippery inclines that can be quite hazardous in flimsy footwear. In fact, local authorities in the Cinque Terre National Park have been known to issue fines to tourists attempting to hike the "Sentiero Azzurro" (Blue Trail) in flip-flops or high heels for safety reasons. Even if you only intend to take the train between the five villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso), you will still encounter significant vertical inclines and hundreds of steps just to get from the stations to the scenic overlooks. A peer-to-peer recommendation is to wear breathable trail runners or lightweight hiking boots with good grip. This will protect your ankles and prevent fatigue as you navigate the rugged Ligurian coastline, ensuring you can focus on the stunning Mediterranean views rather than your aching feet.

Yes you can wear sandals to dinner, but on a rocky trail they could be a problem. A quick google search indicates that no flip flops, sandals, or pumps are allowed on the trails between the towns (fines range from 50-2500 euros depending on the intensity of a rescue mission).

You can walk the entire route in about six hours, if you take short breaks—although many hikers prefer to spread the route out over a few days at a strolling pace, stopping to enjoy the towns along the way. You can start from either direction (Monterosso, heading south, or Riomaggiore, heading north).

Skip town at midday. Cruisers and day-trippers start pouring into the Cinque Terre around 10 a.m. and typically head out by 5 p.m. Those midday hours are your time to hit the beach or find a hike away from the main trails.

For going out in the evening, you will be fine in nice pants and top (with scarf if you like), but if you would rather wear a skirt that is nice too. Or a simple travel dress (short) with cardigan. Clothes are more tailored there so I wouldn't take a maxi-dress.

Sandals are much more comfortable than thick boots if you're going on a more or less even path. This means that rocky, slippery, and/or uneven trails shouldn't be hiked in sandals because they have less grip on the surface. However, if it's not a difficult path you can easily go with sandals.

You can walk in sandals for long distances as long as they have the right features.

Overtourism is a growing phenomenon that our own research indicates affects almost 100 destinations around the world so far, but there are few places in Europe where the problem is so clearly visible as Cinque Terre, on Italy's resplendent Ligurian coast.

Bring mosquito spray with you! As throughout Italy and in the Mediterranean sea in the Cinque Terre there are many insects: mosquitoes, bees, wasps, sand flies and much more. There are not particular problems if you use mosquito spray before sunset and during the night (and during the day if you are allergic).

In the small harbour of Manarola, you can sunbathe on the rocks, and dive into the sea (or use the small ladder). The water is deep, so for good swimmers only. This is one of my favourite swimming spots in the Cinque Terre, especially late afternoon.
