What do you wear to walk in Cinque Terre?

Cinque Terre hiking essentials
  • Proper walking shoes – please notes fines are in place for ill equipped visitors as wrong gear has caused many rescue missions!
  • Hiking trousers/ shorts.
  • Short sleeve tops.
  • Hiking or well cushioned socks.
  • Well fitting hiking backpack.
  • Reusable water bottle.

To walk the trails of Cinque Terre in 2026, the most critical item is sturdy footwear with good grip, such as trail runners or hiking boots. The park authorities have strictly banned walking the trails in flip-flops, sandals, or pumps; travelers caught wearing improper footwear can be fined up to €2,500 because of the high risk of injury on the steep, uneven stone steps. You should wear moisture-wicking layers, as the coastal humidity can be intense even in the shoulder seasons. Lightweight hiking shorts or leggings are ideal. Since there is very little shade on the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and a high-SPF sunscreen are essential. Even in summer, carrying a lightweight windbreaker is smart for the windy segments between Corniglia and Vernazza. Finally, always pack a swimsuit and a travel towel in your daypack, as you will likely want to cool off in the sea at Monterosso or the harbor in Manarola after your hike.

Essential items to hike the Cinque Terre include good, sturdy hiking shoes (I'm very happy with my La Sportiva), sunscreen, bug repellent, and Compeed cushions, in case you get blisters. You won't want to spoil your hike because your feet are hurting!

For going out in the evening, you will be fine in nice pants and top (with scarf if you like), but if you would rather wear a skirt that is nice too. Or a simple travel dress (short) with cardigan. Clothes are more tailored there so I wouldn't take a maxi-dress.

Some portions of the trail are very easy to walk, such as the paved section connecting Riomaggiore to Manarola, and other sections climb up and over hillsides with spectacular views along the coast. It takes about 5 hours to hike the entire distance, not counting the time to explore and linger in each town.

Bring mosquito spray with you! As throughout Italy and in the Mediterranean sea in the Cinque Terre there are many insects: mosquitoes, bees, wasps, sand flies and much more. There are not particular problems if you use mosquito spray before sunset and during the night (and during the day if you are allergic).

You can walk the entire route in about six hours, if you take short breaks—although many hikers prefer to spread the route out over a few days at a strolling pace, stopping to enjoy the towns along the way. You can start from either direction (Monterosso, heading south, or Riomaggiore, heading north).

Vernazza: Located to the north of the Cinque Terre, Vernazza is probably the most beautiful and picturesque fishing village of Cinque Terre, where its colourful houses hang above the sea level on rugged cliffs. It has a charming natural port and an old castle, built to protect the area from pirates.

Here's the deal: We don't tip in Italy. Wait, I take that back. We tip only if we've had what we consider excellent service. In that case, we round the bill (unlike other areas of the world, it's not based on a percentage).

A Taste of the Italian Riviera While tourists come from all over the world to experience the breathtaking hikes and relax by the sea, the food of Cinque Terre is not to be missed. Known for its fresh seafood and taggiasca olives and olive oil, the cuisine is fresh, flavorful, and full of tradition.

Italians appreciate well-tailored clothing, and jeans are no exception. Therefore, you want to opt for jeans that fit you well and accentuate your body shape without being too tight or too baggy. A slim or straight-leg cut is a classic choice that flatters most body types.

Skip town at midday. Cruisers and day-trippers start pouring into the Cinque Terre around 10 a.m. and typically head out by 5 p.m. Those midday hours are your time to hit the beach or find a hike away from the main trails.

In the small harbour of Manarola, you can sunbathe on the rocks, and dive into the sea (or use the small ladder). The water is deep, so for good swimmers only. This is one of my favourite swimming spots in the Cinque Terre, especially late afternoon.
