Partial refunds are not permitted by any supplier. However, if a rental is returned early, and the renter/driver has a valid reason for the return, an exception may be made. Normally this means an emergency situation has taken place (death in family, injury, medical emergency, car malfunctions, etc.).
Hertz allow a 59 minutes grace period. If a renter returns later than this grace period, Hertz charge for extra hours. Excess hour is charged at one fifth of the daily rate subject to a maximum of 5 hours. Thereafter, full day rate will apply.
Hertz Hold on Credit CardThe authorization hold is a standard practice. It ensures that the rental charges and any additional expenses (like fuel charges or late return fees) can be covered by the renter's available credit. The hold amount can be up to US$200 for credit cards and US$500 for debit cards.
If a renter secures their rental with cash, they will receive the refund at the point of return or by mail depending on the location. Note: not all locations will accept cash. If a renter secures their rental with a debit card, their refund will be processed that same day.
Can I get a refund? Contact our Customer Care team at 1 (800) 654-3131 to cancel your reservation and begin the refund process. Please note the refund will take up to 10 business days to process.
Changes to a reservation must be done at Hertz.com using the Modify/Cancel option. Any changes to the reservation may impact the rental charges. If a prepaid reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the pickup time, a $100 cancellation fee will be assessed.
You may incur additional charges if you return the vehicle at a different time or place to that agreed with us or if it is in an excessively dirty or smelly condition. Smoking in the vehicle is prohibited. If the vehicle is returned smelling of smoke an extra cleaning fee will be levied.
Why does it look like I was charged twice? When you extend, we collect the funds held for the previous week and authorize for the next week. This may look like two charges in your account, but only the new authorization will affect your balance.
At the time of rental, an authorization hold will be secured on the credit/debit card provided, to cover the estimated rental charges and any additional charges that may be incurred. These funds will not be available for your use.
Major rental car companies—including Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Hertz—all permit rentals on a debit card. But it's important to read the fine print. While most companies accept debit cards, they look for specific types of cards and require you to take additional steps that can make the process more time-consuming.
What does this mean? You'll get all your money back if you cancel at least a certain time before you're due to pick the car up. This kind of cancellation policy often lets you cancel for free up to (for example) 24, 48 or 72 hours before the pick-up time.
If you arrive at the location more than one (1) hour after the reserved pick-up time, we will try to provide a vehicle for you, however, availability cannot be guaranteed. If the location closes within that one hour period and you fail to pick up the vehicle, the reservation will expire at closing time of the location.
