Most of the time the monorail is faster. Unless you catch the boat just as it is ready to leave. We have stayed here a few times the monorail is the easy way to get there with no delays.
Yes, absolutely!You are welcome to board the Disney monorail at any stop and ride as long as you like. Of course, we recommend taking a look at the resorts along the monorail line to enjoy some extra Disney exploring.
All Disney transportation to and from the theme parks is free and this includes the Walt Disney World monorail. Guests can use the free Disney monorail from the ticket and transportation center over to Magic Kingdom and also to EPCOT.
But, if you take the official WDW transportation bus from a Disney resort of theme park, it will drop you off right between the Contemporary and MK, where you can walk right into the MK gates. You don't even need a ticket into the parks to ride the monorail! Catch a bus to EPCOT or Magic Kingdom and enjoy the ride.
The Magic Kingdom doesn't actually have a parking lot. Instead, guests can park at the Transportation and Ticket Center. They can then take either the Walt Disney World Monorail or a ferry boat across the Seven Seas Lagoon to reach the Magic Kingdom. Take the Monorail to Magic Kingdom!
By far the most scenic transportation choice, water taxies and ferries travel between the resort hotels and the theme parks allowing guests a fun experience along with convenient transportation. Water taxis and ferries sail to and from Magic Kingdom park, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney Springs.
The Epcot Monorail runs from 8am until 2 hours after regular hours park closing. The Express Monorail schedule begins 30 minutes prior to Magic Kingdom opening until 1 hour after regular hours park closing. The Resort Monorail runs from 7am until 1 hour after regular hours park closing at the Magic Kingdom.
The monorail may suspend services from one hour before the Disneyland Park's evening fireworks until 45 minutes afterwards, and ceases to bring guests into the park 30 minutes before closing.
You can ride the monorail any time. No Disney tickets even needed. If you took a bus from Disney Springs to Epcot or Magic Kingdom, you could ride from there. If you are driving to the Ticket and Transportation center to go to the magic kingdom and park, then the monorail is one of your options to get to the park.
The entire set of the beam, the bogies, the wheels, etc. is more complex and expensive for a monorail. Monorail requires a lot of stuff around the beam, often made of expensive rare metals, with a lot more maintenance. Monorail beam itself must be built and maintained to high specifications.
The Epcot Monorail will not get you any closer. If there is a park-to-park bus, that could work, but I don't see it being any faster. Park at the Magic Kingdom...you aren't saving yourself any time by going to EPCOT.
Magic Kingdom Fireworks are at 9pm on most nights. If there is a special event like Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party the fireworks may be earlier, or may not be scheduled for regular guests visiting that day.
Disney's Contemporary Resort (0.5 miles away)One of the best hotels to stay at close to the Magic Kingdom is Disney's Contemporary Resort. The resort has a few modes of transportation to get to the park — you can walk (it's about 10-15 minutes) or take the Monorail!
There's too much in the park to easily do in a single day. It's probably more of a one-and-a-half or two-day park. That said, this is a one day itinerary post, and there are a few approaches you can take to have one very good nearly perfect day at Magic Kingdom.
Arriving at the Magic Kingdom 30–60 minutes before official opening ensures the shortest possible waits for rides. Off-site guests, who aren't eligible for Early Theme Park Entry, should arrive 30 minutes before official opening on all days.
The monorail however does NOT shut during lightning so the closure would have been unrelated and coincidental. The monorail does stop running during lightning storms.

If you would like to visit multiple parks, enjoy a nice dinner at one of the Disney Resort hotels or shop at Disney Springs, you can leave your car parked in the theme park lot and use our transportation network.
How often does the Monorail run? The Disney Monorails generally arrive every 10 minutes when operating at peak hours, when the park opens and closes. There are also times during the day when the wait is longer because either there are technical issues with the Monorail or the park traffic is less robust.
