How long is the cliff walk from Doolin to Cliffs of Moher?

The walk takes approximately 3 hours along a gravel path and finishes at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre where public transport is available for your return to Doolin. Many people start in Doolin, walk the 8 km to the Visitor Center, and then take the shuttle bus back to Doolin.

The cliff walk from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre is a strenuous linear trail approximately 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) long. For an average hiker with a moderate level of fitness, the journey takes between 2.5 and 3 hours one way. It is important to note that as of 2026, some sections of the coastal path are subject to "safety closures" or diversions due to erosion, so the exact route may fluctuate. The trail is gravelly and can be very narrow and steep in places, hugging the edge of the 200-meter drops. Most walkers choose to trek from Doolin to the Visitor Centre and then take the Bus Éireann 350 or a local taxi back to the village. A peer-to-peer "safety essential" for this walk: never attempt it in high winds or thick mist, as the path has no physical barriers between you and the Atlantic Ocean, and the weather on the Irish coast can turn from sunny to "strenuous" in a matter of minutes.

The Cliffs of Moher are stunning! The visitor centre is excellent. It is conveniently open late (at least in August 2021) until 9 pm which allows a good day in Clare/Aran Islands etc and then a trip to see the Cliffs at Sunset. The design of the centre – built into the hillside – is very clever.
