The biggest part of the beach is private and of course you have to pay for the services, but there are some free public beaches as well: in front of the railway station, under the statue of the Giant and at the end of the beach towards Vernazza, near the historical center.

Monterosso al Mare is the most touristic of the Cinque Terre. As soon as you leave the train station, you are immediately on the Fegina seafront. In front there are two free beaches, interspersed with a bathing establishment: free beach of Fegina and free beach of the Station.

So make sure you really have a day at the beach while in Cinque Terre. There is a restaurant above the beach where you can pick up beer, wine and snack to enjoy on the beach.

Monterosso's port is the easiest to get on and off in, followed by Vernazza. If you intend to get on or off in Riomaggiore or Manarola, expect to walk many steps to actually get into each village. The towns of Portovenere and Portofino are easy to access from the ferry boats as well.

There are basically three ways to move from one village to another; you either walk, take the train or the boat. The walking trail is 12 kilometers and runs along the coast through all five villages from Riomaggiore in the south to Monterosso in the north.

If you want a good, long stretch beach with deckchairs and waves in Cinque Terre, then you have to go to Monterosso. However I prefer swimming at Manarola. Manarola has two swimming areas, neither of which are 'beaches' as such.
