In 2026, the Shinkansen is not "free" but rather "included" for users of the Japan Rail (JR) Pass, with some very important caveats. Following the massive price hike in late 2023, the JR Pass remains a premium product that allows unlimited travel on most Shinkansen lines, such as the Hikari, Sakura, and Kodama. However, the two fastest and most frequent trains—the Nozomi (on the Tokaido/Sanyo line) and the Mizuho (on the Sanyo/Kyushu line)—are not included in the base price of the pass. If you want to use these premium services, you must purchase a special "supplementary ticket" for each journey, which can be quite expensive. For all other Shinkansen trains, you can simply show your pass or use it at the automatic gates to board non-reserved cars. If you want a reserved seat (which is highly recommended in 2026 during peak seasons), you can book them for no extra charge at a ticket machine or "Midori no Madoguchi" counter. Note that the JR Pass also does not cover private (non-JR) rail lines or most "Gran Class" luxury cabins without a high additional fee.
