Disney is currently expanding its footprint into residential real estate through its "Storyliving by Disney" brand, with the inaugural community, named Cotino, being built in Rancho Mirage, California. Located in the heart of the Coachella Valley, this location was chosen specifically because of its historical connection to Walt Disney himself, who owned a home in the area and frequently retreated there for creative inspiration. Cotino is designed to offer a mix of detached single-family homes and condominiums, with a specific section dedicated to residents aged 55 and better. The centerpiece of the development is a 24-acre "grand oasis" featuring a turquoise lagoon powered by Crystal Lagoons technology. Following Cotino, Disney has announced a second community called Asteria, which is planned for Pittsboro, North Carolina, near the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. These communities are not theme parks but are designed to "infuse Disney's brand of storytelling" into everyday life, offering club memberships with Disney-curated programming, wellness activities, and high-end amenities that mirror the service standards found at Disney's global resorts and cruise lines.
