Where to avoid staying in Rome?

Neighborhoods to avoid Rome's most crime-riddled neighborhoods include Tor Bella Monaca, Romanina, San Basilio, and Corviale. As these are predominantly residential areas, you may have no reason to ever visit them. However, if you do, try to avoid them at night.

There's no problem walking alone. It might be better to avoid it on dark deserted streets, as common sense would tell you. I spend a month at a time in Rome, alone, and walk all over and often late into the night. In any city anywhere in the world you need to use common sense.

Generally, I'd advice you not to walk alone in Termini (train station area) or Tiburtina (also a station) late at night. However, if you are staying in Rome's historic center, such as Via Veneto, or Campo de' Fiori, Spanish Steps area, Trevi Fountain area, or Trastevere, you should not be worried.

Generally speaking, it's a safe area. Still, it probably isn't good to wander around alone in many places in Rome in the wee hours of the morning. If you don't plan to do that, just keep to the more well-traveled areas and you should be safe both day and night.

Once the sun goes down, this famous landmark lights up. As luck would have it, the area is typically less crowded at this time. For the best results, consider making this one of your last activities of the day. Many suggest the best time to go to Trevi Fountain is between 8 pm - 11 pm.

From a safety perspective, in short, you should avoid being out alone near the Termini station area at night. You should also avoid attempts from strangers who talk at you as you walk by. This might happen in the areas around the colosseum.

However, if you do have a choice, and considering what I pointed out above, the best time to visit Rome would be mid-week: a tad less crowded (depending on the season), and shops, restaurants and museums tend to be open during mid-week.
