SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Every day, an average of 33 car owners are mistakenly accused of failing to pay a toll on a Bay Area Bridge, and many of those say fighting Fastrak's mistakes can be time consuming and frustrating.

In California, if you go through FasTrak lane without a pass, you will receive a toll violation notice. Toll violation will include the regular toll rate plus a penalty as: First notice: $25 penalty. Second notice: $70.
First notice issued: toll plus $25 penalty. Second (delinquent) notice issued: toll plus $70 ($25 penalty plus $45 late fee). If the toll is paid within 15 days, the penalty is reduced to $25.
If you open an account with a valid credit card, FasTrak collects an initial prepaid balance of $25 per toll tag. Your account will automatically be replenished as needed. This is the easiest way to ensure your balance is maintained.
It is worth noting that most airports can not guarantee that fast track security lines will be quicker. However, if you are flying during a peak time - if your flight leaves before 10am or during seasonal peaks such as school holidays - then you are more likely to experience the benefit of fast track security.
FasTrak says many drivers may need to trade in their old toll tags for new ones. Toll tags run out of battery power over time, making it hard for some sensors to detect them.
