How fast does Tron ride go?

Walt Disney World's new Tron Lightcycle Run roller coaster immediately separates itself from the vacation destination's other thrill rides with a pulse-pounding launch that propels users, er, guests nearly 60 miles per hour.

The TRON Lightcycle / Run roller coaster at Disney’s Magic Kingdom (and the original version at Shanghai Disneyland) reaches a maximum speed of nearly 60 miles per hour (97 km/h). This makes it one of the fastest attractions at any Disney theme park worldwide. The ride begins with a high-speed "launch" that blasts riders out of the "Upload Conduit" and underneath a massive, color-shifting canopy before heading back inside into the darkened "Grid" environment. The launch is the point where the maximum speed is achieved, utilizing powerful linear synchronous motors (LSM) to propel the train from zero to its top speed in just seconds. Despite the high speed, the ride is known for being incredibly smooth rather than "jerky," as it is a motorbike-style coaster where riders lean forward as if they are riding a lightcycle from the films. The sensation of speed is further enhanced by the proximity to the glowing blue lights and the synchronized electronic soundtrack composed specifically for the attraction. While 60 mph may seem modest compared to some "iron" coasters at parks like Six Flags, the unique seating position and the immersive indoor environment make it feel significantly faster and more intense than the numbers might suggest on paper.

TRON does move up and down a fair bit, but there's very little of that “stomach-drop” feeling with your feet leaving the floor. That's for two reasons. The first is that on a Lightcycle your head points down, not your feet. But the bigger reason is that almost all of TRON's rise-and-drop motion includes a turn.

The TRON ride vehicles — or Lightcycles — are similar to a motorcycle. The ride is adjacent to Space Mountain, Disney's original high-thrill coaster, which will make comparisons inevitable. Tron is smoother and much faster – Space Mountain maxes out at a relatively tame 27 mph. But the nostalgic in me preferred the jerky, in-the-dark dips and turns of Space Mountain.
